May 12 – July 3, 2023
written by Brian Newell, based upon the Novel by Michael Shaara
In the three bloodiest days of our nation’s history the battle of Gettysburg became a turning point in the American civil war. A war that divided our country and tested whether our idea of democracy and freedom could survive. This year marks the 160th anniversary of Gettysburg and to remember that significant conflict the Maverick Theater is re-staging their original adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel, “The Killer Angels.”
In 1974, author Michael Shaara published “The Killer Angels,” his narrative on the battle of Gettysburg. Shaara used diaries, journals and letters to recreate what was happening on the battlefield and what the soldiers were thinking and feeling during this critical time in our history.
After a sold out premier run in 2017, Maverick Theater’s founder, Brian Newell, stages his original adaptation once again for the Maverick’s 21st season. His play, “The Killer Angels, Soldiers of Gettysburg,” brings Shaara’s powerful writing to life in a very intimate staging that is enjoyable for both the Civil War enthusiast and those unfamiliar with that battle.”
